Benefits of medical nanotechnology
Nanotechnology is playing a vital role in the field of medicine, especially in dispensing medicine and hygiene in most of the developing nations. You can expect miracles in the field of pharmacy and medicine with the growth of nanotechnology. For instance, to disinfect contaminated water, people in Bangladesh may (in the future) expose water to direct sunlight. The nano particles present in the water container will filter out the impurities and as a result, they may get pure and clean drinking water. For another example, Mexican doctors will, most likely, be able to dispense their patients with medicines that have to be inhaled, refrigeration may not be needed.
The above points may look quite impossible as of now, but they are possible keeping in mind the new developments taking shape in the field of nanotechnology. Moreover, scientists are seeing nanotechnology as a way to ameliorate health of the masses in most developing nations. These points were discussed as possibilities at a conference in which Peter Singer (a Professor of Medicine, University of Toronto as well as a Scientist at McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health) was a key participant. There are 2 more major organisations namely the Global Health Initiative and the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies, which helped to organise the conference.
It was calculated that more than 5 billion people living in the developing nations will benefit from the upcoming health benefits from Nanotechnology. Efforts of Nanotechnology research in a few countries like Brazil, China, India and South Africa are already in line to meet the needs of the poor.
India’s budget is $20 million from 2004 to 2009 in Nanotechnology initiatives, whereas Brazil is prepared had plans to invest about $25 million from 2004 to 2007.
With the help of nanotechnology,
1. Diagnostic and surgical tools will become cheap yet effective.
2. Diagnosis and research will be more efficient.
3. Medical devices can be made smaller and will be implanted forever.
4. Most medical problems will be prevented.
5. Diagnosis as well as treatment will be semi-automated.
6. Health will improve. As a result, lifespan will increase.
7. Some organs can be replaceable.
8. New diseases can be cured quickly.
9. Systems will be improved individually.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) have created NAC - Nanotechnology Alliance for Cancer to bring nanotechnology into a clinical atmosphere. The main objective of NAC is to develop Nanomedical devices and Nanomaterials which can be brought into use, in developing countries, in order to treat disease and sickness, especially to prevent cancer. Nanotechnology will fulfill the world’s health needs in the near future.
