Note: there are spoilers for It ahead

It terrified audiences when it was released in 2017, introducing Bill Skarsgård's take on It/Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The sequel will pick up 27 years after the first film, as The Losers' Club (consisting of Bill Denbrough, Richie Tozier, Mike Hanlon, Eddie Kaspbrak, Stan Uris, Ben Hanscom, and Beverly Marsh) head back to Derry, Maine, and attempt to destroy It once and for all.

In the first film, after the disappearance of Bill Denbrough's brother, Georgie Denbrough, it's revealed that the small town of Derry has been plagued by child disappearances for decades. The Losers' Club soon realize It/Penniwise, who turns into manifestations of what the kids fear most, is behind the attacks.

After several more attacks by Pennywise, the group convene at an abandoned house, thought to have access to an underground well where It lives. They eventually attack and critically injure It, who retreats to tend to his injuries.

A few weeks later, It captures Beverly, and the remaining Losers Club members descend into the well to rescue her. After a battle, the group defeat It, causing It to go into hibernation without any food, and conclude that It will die from starvation.

In the end, the Losers swear to come back to Derry as adults if It ever returns.
